Central Board of Excise & Customs Raises Appeal Limits to Cut Litigation; Chief Commissioners to Withdraw Minor Appeals.
The Central Board of Excise & Customs has increased monetary limits for filing appeals to reduce government litigation. Chief Commissioners are instructed to withdraw appeals below these limits from CESTAT and High Courts, as per instructions dated 17.12.2015 and 21.12.2015. Discrepancies have been noted in reported and actual pending appeals. Chief Commissioners must re-examine appeal files and report on appeals fit for withdrawal, applications filed, and cases withdrawn. A zone-wise list is provided, and a similar review is required for appeals affected by a Supreme Court decision per instructions dated 18.12.2015. Reports are to be submitted promptly.
