India Bans Import of Second-Hand Tyres for Direct Use, Following Hazardous Waste Rules 2008 Committee Advice.
The import of second-hand tyres for direct use is not permitted in India. This decision follows the recommendations of the Technical Review Committee under the Hazardous Waste Rules, 2008. The Committee noted that India has sufficient tyre manufacturing capacity, and all tyres used domestically must have BIS certification, except those imported by Original Equipment Manufacturers and distributed through authorized dealers. Additionally, there is no simple method to test the road safety or residual life of used tyres. This notice is directed to the trade community and customs brokers for compliance. Any implementation issues should be reported to the Additional Commissioner.
