Finance Ministry Deploys CLRI Officials at Key Customs Points to Halt Semi-Processed Leather Mislabeling, Effective April 2013.
The Ministry of Finance has issued instructions to deploy officials from the Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI) at specified Customs locations in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Kanpur, and Tughlakabad to prevent the export of semi-processed leather as finished leather, which evades export duties. The Council for Leather Exports will cover the costs of these officials, who will assist Customs officers in examining leather export consignments. Samples will be drawn in the presence of CLRI officials and sent for testing. These measures are effective from April 15, 2013, and require cooperation from Chief Commissioners of Customs at the designated locations.
