Karnataka High Court Rules UN Pensions Tax-Exempt Under U.N. (Privileges & Immunities) Act, 1947; CBDT Accepts Decision.
Pensions received by former United Nations officials are exempt from income tax under the U.N. (Privileges & Immunities) Act, 1947, as interpreted by the Karnataka High Court in a specific case. The court ruled that since salaries paid by the United Nations are tax-exempt, pensions, which are considered part of salary under the Income-tax Act, 1961, should also be exempt. The Central Board of Direct Taxes has accepted this decision, advising that any pending appeals related to this issue should be conceded and reference applications withdrawn.
