Central Excise Board Pushes for Full Digital Transition: Manual Revenue Reports End January 2000; SERMON Package by September 1999.
The Central Excise Board reviewed the progress of its computerization initiative, noting that 42 Commissionerates have started capturing assessee profiles and monthly returns. The data quality is not yet satisfactory, but improvement is expected within six months. To accelerate progress, a firm deadline has been set to discontinue manual revenue reports by January 2000, replacing them with electronic RT-12 data. Commissionerates must prepare budget statements using the SERMON package by September 1999. Any challenges should be reported to the Board and the Directorate of Systems.
