DGFT Clarifies Weights and Measures Rules: Retail Pre-packaged Goods Need Labels, But Not Raw Imports or Bulk Items.
The circular from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade clarifies the applicability of the Standards of Weights and Measures (Package Commodity) Rules, 1977, concerning imports. It specifies that labeling requirements outlined in a previous notification apply only to pre-packaged commodities intended for retail sale. Imports such as raw materials, components, and bulk items, which undergo further processing or assembly before reaching consumers, are exempt from these labeling requirements. This clarification has been issued with the approval of the Director General of Foreign Trade.
