What are the Types of Food Licenses?

The FSSAI registration food license is an important part of the food business in India. The food licenses are of various types which are issued on the basis of the scale of the business and the mode of operation. The three major categories of FSSAI License are as follows:

FSSAI Basic Registration – Small businesses with an annual turnover of fewer than 12 lakhs are eligible for this.  

FSSAI State License – Businesses with an annual turnover of 12 lakh rupees to 20 crore rupees are eligible for this.

FSSAI Central License – Businesses that deal in import/export and have an annual turnover of more than 20 crore rupees are eligible for this.

Who can Obtain FSSAI Food License?

FSSAI Registration and FSSAI license are two different things and need to be distinguished accordingly. An FSSAI Registration does not fall under the purview of the License and thus can not include sellers under the FSSAI Registration. Some of the businesses eligible under the FSSAI License are: 

FSSAI State License is for businesses with a turnover between 12 lakh to 20 crore rupees yearly. The applicable businesses are:

  • Proprietary category of Foods
  • 4-star Hotels and below
  • Production or processing of 500 to 50000 liters.
  • Meat industry with a capacity of not more than
  • 2 to 50 large animals 
  • 10 to 150 small animals
  • 50 to 1000 poultry birds
  • Food processing capacity of 100 kg/liter to 2 metric tonnes.

FSSAI Central License is for businesses with a turnover of more than 20 crore rupees and deals in the import and export of products.

  • Businesses with branches
  • 5-star or higher rated Hotels
  • production or processing of food is 100 % export-oriented in the
  • Central Government Caterers 
  • Meat industry with a capacity of not more than
  • 50 large animals or more 
  • 150 small animals or more
  • 1000 or more poultry birds per day
  • Food processing capacity of over 2 metric tonnes per day.
