Foreign portfolio investment permits dealings in listed securities, approved derivatives and Indian Depository Receipts subject to prescribed conditions.

Foreign Portfolio Investors may purchase or sell equity instruments of Indian companies listed, or proposed to be listed, on recognised Indian stock exchanges, and may deal in other securities subject to Schedule II. They may trade or invest in approved exchange-traded derivatives within applicable regulatory limits and Schedule II conditions. They may also purchase, hold or sell Indian Depository Receipts issued in the Indian capital market by companies resident outside India, subject to Schedule X.
