Sugar price-control measures combine raw-sugar imports, stockholding limits and export restrictions to curb retail price pressures.
Sugar price-control measures combine authorised raw-sugar imports, stockholding limits for dealers and bulk consumers, and an existing export prohibition to address elevated domestic prices. Imports are permitted within the specified period, while stockholding restrictions seek to curb speculation and hoarding. Retail prices continued to rise despite lower ex-mill prices, and the regulatory approach focuses on augmenting supply, limiting stock accumulation, and preventing export-related pressure on domestic availability.

Input tax credit mismatch alone cannot support fraud-based GST demand without an assessing officer's recorded satisfaction of fraud or suppression.
Section 74 GST demand proceedings require the assessing officer's independent satisfaction of fraud, wilful misstatement or suppression of facts. An input tax credit mismatch or alleged short payment alone cannot establish these conditions. Unsupported assertions of suppression for invoking extended limitation are insufficient, and audit objections cannot replace the assessing officer's satisfaction. A show cause-cum-demand notice lacking factual allegations of a deliberate device to evade tax or avail excess input tax credit is vulnerable.

Fraudulent Aadhaar procurement exposes identity-verification gaps and prompts disclosure, expedited investigation, deportation, and statutory review measures.
Fraudulent procurement of Aadhaar and other identity documents by foreign nationals who infiltrate borders may undermine identity verification, immigration control and national security. Coordinated action is required to trace and deport such persons, prevent re-entry, strengthen document verification, and complete investigations without delay. Amendments to the Aadhaar Act are to be considered to assist investigating agencies, while a dedicated procedure is required to address border infiltration and human trafficking. Aadhaar enrolment records are to be supplied to police, followed by timely deportation proceedings.

Foreign investment liberalisation proposals receive industry support, subject to preserving AIF treatment, grandfathering, and prospective application.
Proposed foreign-investment liberalisation, including treatment of stakes below 10 per cent and a greater role for market forces in valuation, is welcomed. Preservation of the existing treatment of Alternative Investment Funds under the IOCC framework is emphasised, together with grandfathering of transactions and funds undertaken under the current regulatory position. Newly introduced requirements should operate prospectively to support a simpler, predictable and investment-friendly foreign-investment framework.

Credit lifecycle consistency requires facility-specific treatment so UPI-linked credit records, repayments and customer obligations remain aligned.
CARD91's Credit Lifecycle Consistency Framework calls for facility-specific treatment of Credit Line on UPI transactions and continuing credit events. Credit limits, outstanding balances, repayments, refunds, reversals and EMI conversions should be accurately connected to the relevant customer account and applied according to the underlying facility's terms. Bank policy, customer consent, transaction controls and portfolio actions should remain aligned. Customer-facing applications, statements and alerts should consistently reflect available credit, outstanding obligations and repayment schedules, while disputes and manual corrections follow documented, reviewable processes.

Non-revolving credit lines require term-loan structures supporting multiple drawdowns without replenishing sanctioned limits for NBFC lending products.
Proposed restrictions on revolving credit facilities for most NBFCs would generally require credit products to operate as term loans, rather than facilities in which principal repayment automatically restores the available borrowing limit. Compliance may require technology capable of managing multiple drawdowns within an approved sanction, separate repayment schedules, amortisation and servicing workflows, while preventing repaid principal from replenishing the sanctioned limit.

Reciprocal trade tariffs intensify as negotiations confront market access, cultural protections, industrial safeguards, and sovereignty concerns.
US-Canada tariff escalation involves reciprocal import duties following failed negotiations over market access and trade in dairy, alcoholic beverages, automobiles, steel, aluminium and softwood lumber. United States tariff action relies on a rarely used trade-law power permitting duties against countries considered to discriminate against American businesses, without a prior investigation or stated time limit. Negotiations also raised concerns about protection of major industries, cultural protections and Canada's freedom to conclude trade agreements with other countries.

Customs classification of unassembled vehicle imports requires fresh hearing after reserved tax challenge was released without verdict.
The dispute concerns customs classification of imported unassembled vehicle parts. Customs authorities allege that parts imported in separate shipments should have been declared as completely knocked down (CKD) units, attracting the higher duty applicable to CKD imports, rather than as individual components subject to lower duty. The manufacturer contests the resulting customs demand. Proceedings have been released for fresh hearing before the regular indirect-tax writ bench, with status quo maintained for four weeks.

Retaliatory tariffs on imported goods escalate trade measures, targeting key sectors while maintaining support for affected domestic businesses.
Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs on United States-origin industrial and consumer goods following increased United States tariffs on Canadian goods. Effective 8 September, the measures apply at rates of 15%, 25% and 50% across more than 700 products, including steel, aluminium, appliances, dairy products, seafood, furniture, clothing, pulp and paper, and electronics. Existing countertariffs on automobiles remain in force. Foreign-exchange market intervention and lower crude prices supported rupee appreciation, while USD/INR remained range-bound amid shifting dollar conditions.
Foreign-exchange market conditions supported rupee appreciation against the US dollar, driven by stronger domestic equity markets, a weaker US dollar and lower crude oil prices. The USD/INR pair remained broadly range-bound, with oil-price movements and Reserve Bank intervention identified as key near-term influences. The special USD-INR foreign-exchange swap facility for FCNR(B) deposits, overseas foreign-currency borrowings and external commercial borrowings mobilised substantial foreign-exchange inflows.

Section 301 tariffs may have lower impact where major exports remain outside their scope amid resilient domestic demand.
Economic resilience is attributed to buoyant domestic demand, increased manufacturing and services activity, improving liquidity conditions, credit growth, investment activity and rebounding foreign capital inflows. Recovery in the southwest monsoon improved kharif sowing and reservoir storage, partly mitigating agricultural-sector risks. US Section 301 tariffs are expected to have a comparatively lower effect because major Indian exports to the United States, including smartphones, petroleum products and pharmaceuticals, remain outside their scope. Foreign direct investment improved with higher gross inflows, while outward foreign direct investment continued to decline.

India-Canada FTA talks can be concluded before year end target: Goyal

New Delhi, May 26 (PTI) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Tuesday said officials of India and Canada are negotiating the proposed free trade agreement with full sincerity, and the talks could even be concluded before the end of this year, possibly by October.

He said that immense opportunities are there for businesses of both countries to enhance collaborations in areas such as innovation, seafood, education, finance, insurance, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals.

Goyal, speaking at a business event in Toronto, said that the prime ministers of India and Canada have "tasked both (Canada's Trade Minister) Maninder (Sidhu) and me to make sure that we work in a mission mode and finalise a very comprehensive economic partnership agreement (CEPA) before the end of the year".

The minister is in Canada for a three-day official visit, starting on May 25. He is leading a delegation of industry leaders from over 100 companies.

He added that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has suggested concluding the negotiations by the end of November, that is, before the G20 Summit.

"Thank god he didn't say we should deliver before the G20 trade ministerial, because that is in October, but possibly we can. And I suspect, the sincerity that I've seen in both the negotiating teams, don't be surprised if they actually can deliver even faster than targeted," he added.

The 2026 G20 Summit is scheduled to be held on December 14-15, 2026, in Miami, United States, under the presidency of the US.

The two countries have also set a target to increase the bilateral trade from USD 17 billion at present to USD 50 billion by 2030, Goyal said.

Goyal has called on Carney in Ottawa, and both sides expressed optimism about the early conclusion of the trade pact negotiations.

In a social media post, Carney said, "We're negotiating a free trade deal with India. This will be a game changer for Canadian workers and businesses, unlocking a massive new market. We're working fast. I met Minister @PiyushGoyal to review our progress so far and explore the opportunities ahead for both our countries in energy, agri-food, tech, and education." The two countries are negotiating a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). Two rounds of negotiations have been completed. The third round is going on in Ottawa from May 25 to 29.

In such pacts, two trading partners significantly reduce and eliminate import duties on the maximum number of goods traded between them. Besides, they also ease norms to promote trade in services and boost investments.

The Indian business delegation represents different sectors, including energy, mining, automotive goods, education, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications, artificial intelligence, leather, and textiles.

Addressing businesses of both sides, Goyal said India offers huge opportunities as it has a talented workforce, 1.4 billion consumers and a fast-growing economy.

"The opportunities are so huge that ultimately good economics will ensure a good partnership today," he said, adding that investors get good returns on their investments in India.

Goyal suggested that India's digital public infrastructure, like UPI, can help in reducing transaction costs in Canada.

Critical minerals from Canada can help India become a manufacturing hub for sectors like electric vehicles and electronic goods.

Both sides can explore dual-degree in the education sector and, in the future, consider campuses of eminent Indian institutions in Canada while also inviting Canadian institutions to teach Indian students in India.

The Canadian trade minister will visit India in November this year, Goyal said.

"Rejuvenate and bring back the mojo that always existed between Canada and India. Let's not get diverted by small intermissions. Let's focus on the core. Let's ensure that we don't allow the past to weigh us down. The political reset will build upon the economic reset, and both go together. It's a win-win situation that is presented to all of us," Goyal said.

He said that a big business delegation is here from India, demonstrating tremendous complementarities between the two nations.

It also reflects that India believes in this relationship, the minister said.

"We may have a few misunderstandings. We may have a few disagreements, but marriages are forever. Marriages are to be nurtured," he added.

These remarks assume significance as the ongoing CEPA talks are a resumption of negotiations for the proposed trade pact, which was paused in 2023.

In 2023, Canada paused negotiations for the agreement with India after the bilateral relations hit rock bottom following then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations of a potential Indian link to the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The renewed vibrancy in ties between the two countries followed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's talks with his Canadian counterpart Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit at Canada's Kananaskis in June 2025.

Both sides in November 2025 announced restarting talks for the pact.

Key exports from India to Canada include pharmaceuticals, iron and steel, seafood, cotton garments, electronic goods and chemicals, among others.

Imports include pulses, pearls and semi-precious stones, coal, fertiliser, paper and petroleum crude.

India's main services sector exports include telecommunications, computer and information services, and other business services.

Canada is also home to over 4,25,000 Indian students and a strong Indian community.

Joint Secretary in the Department of Commerce, Brij Mohan Mishra, is the chief negotiator from the Indian side. Bruce Christie is Canada's chief negotiator. PTI RR HVA
