Responsible AI banking requires human oversight, explainable customer decisions, fair conduct, resilient systems and inclusive credit access.
Responsible AI in banking must promote inclusion, resilience and customer trust while preserving human judgement, governance accountability and clear responsibility. AI and alternative data may widen access to credit where data is obtained with consent, tested for reliability and bias, and used prudently. Banks must maintain capacity to challenge models, oversee providers, test systems under adverse conditions and intervene when automation fails. Material customer decisions must be explainable, clearly communicated and subject to review by an authorised person. Fair conduct, meaningful disclosure, impartial complaint review and transparent communication remain essential throughout the customer relationship.

Trade deficit pressures persist as energy-import costs and currency weakness offset record automobile and electronics export growth.
Japan recorded its highest July import and export values since comparable statistics began, but continued to experience a trade deficit as rising energy costs increased import expenditure. Higher crude oil prices and disruption to Middle East supply routes affected an economy reliant on imported oil, while a weak yen raised the cost of fuel, food and raw materials. Strong automobile, semiconductor and electronics exports benefited from currency weakness, which also increased the yen value of overseas earnings.

Supply-side inflation risks support a policy pause pending evidence of broad-based, persistent price pressures and de-anchored expectations.
Monetary policy calibration remained on hold because food and fuel inflation had not yet produced broad-based or persistent price pressures. The policy pause was supported by limited pass-through of supply-side shocks, contained core inflation and no clear demand-driven overheating. Recalibration depends on incoming evidence of persistent inflation, entrenched supply-side pressures, de-anchored expectations and the evolving growth-inflation dynamic. Geopolitical disruption, volatile oil prices, monsoon conditions and El Nin o-related agricultural risks remain material inflation risks.

Trade restrictions on Iran halt commercial and financial exchanges as regional security threats disrupt maritime commerce and re-export access.
UAE trade restrictions on Iran halted all trade, commercial exchanges and financial transactions until further notice following reported ballistic-missile incidents and regional security escalation. The UAE assessed the missiles as directed at maritime traffic, while Iran denied launching them. The suspension disrupts the UAE's role as a major trade and re-export gateway for Iran and may increase Iran's economic isolation. Continuing threats to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz also create economic risk for the UAE's regional business, finance and tourism position.

Inflation persistence and expectations guide continued rate hold amid supply shocks and uncertainty over broader price pressures.
Monetary policy calibration remains contingent on clearer evidence that supply-side price shocks are becoming persistent, broad-based inflationary pressures. The policy rate was maintained unchanged amid uncertainty from higher energy costs, supply-chain disruption, an erratic monsoon and food, fuel and input-price risks. Policy tightening may be required if inflation becomes generalised, expectations become de-anchored, or inflation persists. A wait-and-watch approach was preferred pending clearer realised inflation, forecasts, weather effects and global conditions.

US futures jump after Trump, while on Asian tour, says he expects trade deal with China

Bangkok, Oct 27 (AP) Wall Street is poised to add to last week's records when markets open Monday after President Donald Trump said he expected to reach a trade agreement with China.

Futures for the S&P 500 jumped 0.9 per cent while futures for the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.5 per cent. Nasdaq futures, boosted by chipmakers, were up 1.3 per cent. Nvidia was up 2.5 per cent while Micron jumped 4.1 per cent.

Aside from Trump's meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, markets will be focused on another heavy slate of corporate earnings this week, as well as what's expected to be another quarter-point interest rate cut from the Federal Reserve on Wednesday.

Google, Meta, Microsoft, Apple and Amazon all report their latest quarterly results this week.

Keurig Dr Pepper gained 3.7 per cent after the beverage company topped Wall Street's third-quarter profit forecasts and issued strong guidance.

Work on trade deals that might alleviate friction between the US, China and other major trading partners has reassured investors, especially in Asia.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 gained 2.5 per cent to 50,512.32, a new closing high following news that the world's two largest economies had reached an initial consensus for Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to finalise during a high-stakes meeting later in the week.

“I have a lot of respect for President Xi,” Trump told reporters after visiting Malaysia for a summit of Southeast Asian nations, where he reached preliminary trade agreements with Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

“I think we're going to come away with a deal,” Trump said.

Chinese markets logged solid gains. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.1 per cent to 26,434.69, while the Shanghai Composite index added 1.2 per cent to 3,996.94.

“This isn't just photo-op diplomacy. Behind the showmanship, Washington and Beijing's top trade lieutenants have quietly mapped out a framework that might, just might, keep the world's two largest economies from tearing up the field again,” Stephen Innes of SPI Asset Management said in a commentary.

Trump travelled to Japan on Monday and will end his Asian tour in South Korea, where he is expected to meet with Xi on the sidelines of a Pacific Rim summit, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (known as APEC) forum.

Opinion polls show Japan's newly installed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi enjoys high levels of public support for her market-friendly policies and apparent strong performance in her debut at the regional summit. Japan's first female prime minister, Takaichi, favours raising defence spending. That has boosted the prices of stocks in major defence contractors, such as Kawasaki Heavy Industries, which gained 9 per cent. IHI Corp. jumped 2.8 per cent and Hitachi gained 3.7 per cent.

Trump has long complained American cars were shut out of Japanese markets, one of various reasons he cited for imposing tariffs of 25 per cent, then lowered to 15 per cent, on America's most vital ally in Asia. So as part of its negotiations with Washington, Japan's government has floated the idea of buying a fleet of Ford F-150 trucks to use to inspect roads and infrastructure.

In South Korea, the Kospi gained 2.6 per cent to 4,042.83, also a record. Investors there are hoping for a trade deal with Trump. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 picked up 0.4 per cent to 9,055.60.

Taiwan's Taiex gained 1.7 per cent, and the Sensex in India was up 0.7 per cent.

Despite the positive talk about trade agreements, a report by the APEC secretariat released Monday forecast that annual growth in the region circling the Pacific will slow to 3 per cent this year from 3.6 per cent last year, partly due to trade restrictions and higher tariffs.

In Europe at midday, Germany's DAX and the CAC 40 in Paris each ticked up 0.1 per cent, while Britain's FTSE 100 was unchanged.

On Friday, US stocks hit records after an update on inflation came in a bit less painful than feared.

The inflation data was encouraging because it could mean less pain for lower- and middle-income households struggling with still-high increases in prices. Even more importantly for Wall Street, it could also clear the way for the Federal Reserve to keep cutting interest rates in hopes of giving a boost to the slowing job market.

In energy trading, the US benchmark crude oil gave up early gains, falling 38 cents to USD 61.12 per barrel. Brent crude, the international standard, declined 37 cents to USD 64.83 per barrel.

Oil prices have eased and settled after climbing nearly 8 per cent last week when the US and European Union ratcheted up sanctions on Russian oil in an attempt to get Russian President Vladimir Putin to the bargaining table over his years-long war in Ukraine. (AP) SKS SKS
