Rules of origin prevent third-country transshipment from receiving preferential tariffs under bilateral trade arrangements between partner economies.
India-New Zealand free trade preferences apply only to goods satisfying Rules of Origin. Third-country goods routed through New Zealand cannot receive preferential Indian tariff treatment, as bilateral cumulation is confined to originating materials and goods of India and New Zealand. Sensitive sectors receive no duty concessions, while a bilateral safeguard mechanism addresses sudden import surges after duty elimination or reduction. Temporary Employment Entry, student mobility commitments, post-study work opportunities, and exemption from directly funded social-security contributions for temporary Indian residents form part of the services framework.

Tariff policy and trade truce reshape bilateral engagement as rare-earth leverage limits coercive economic measures.
United States-China trade relations are being conducted through continued tariff policy, prior export restrictions, and a trade truce after escalating tariffs did not achieve their intended effect of changing Chinese economic conduct. China's concentrated supply of rare-earth inputs used in electronics provided negotiating leverage and contributed to the trade armistice. Indications that Chinese goods are routed through third countries to lessen tariff exposure qualify the decline in the bilateral goods imbalance. Continued tariffs have not constrained China's manufacturing expansion or its access to export markets.

New Delhi [India], September 2: Do you want to install rooftop solar but find the upfront cost too high? Want to reduce your monthly electricity bill for years to come? The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana can help you do both. The Government of India launched the scheme in February 2024 to help residential households install rooftop solar through financial support.

Under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, eligible households can currently receive a central subsidy of up to ₹78,000.

The scheme has already grown quickly. As of 22 July 2026, 39.72 lakh rooftop solar systems had been installed, benefiting more than 48 lakh households.

DISCOMs also reported that over 18.93 lakh beneficiaries received a zero electricity bill during at least one billing period after installing rooftop solar.

Here is a simple guide to the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana 2026, including subsidy, eligibility, registration, cost, documents, application process and financing.

What Is PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana? The PM Surya Ghar scheme is a Central Government programme that helps households install grid-connected rooftop solar systems.

It was approved with an outlay of ₹75,021 crore and aims to support rooftop solar installations in one crore residential households. The programme was designed to help participating households get up to 300 units of electricity per month through rooftop solar generation.

Instead of getting 300 units directly from the government every month, your rooftop system generates electricity from sunlight. The subsidy lowers your installation cost, while the solar electricity helps reduce the amount of power you need from the grid.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Subsidy 2026 The PM Surya Ghar subsidy depends on your rooftop solar system's capacity.

Subsidy Structure Rooftop Solar Capacity Central Subsidy 1 kW ₹30,000 2 kW ₹60,000 3 kW ₹78,000 Above 3 kW Maximum ₹78,000 The government provides ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the additional 1 kW. The PM Surya Ghar solar subsidy is capped at 3 kW.

How Much Subsidy Do You Get for 1 kW, 2 kW and 3 kW? For a 1 kW system, you can receive ₹30,000. A 2 kW installation gets ₹60,000, while a 3 kW system gets the maximum central subsidy of ₹ 78,000.

Is There a Subsidy for Solar Systems Above 3 kW? Yes, but the amount does not increase with system size. An eligible 5 kW or 10 kW residential system can still receive a maximum central subsidy of ₹78,000.

Does the State Government Provide Additional Subsidy? Some states may offer additional incentives on top of the central PM Surya Ghar Yojana subsidy. These benefits are state-specific and can change, so check the latest information from your state renewable-energy agency or DISCOM before calculating the final cost.

Who Is Eligible for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana? According to the Government of India, PM Surya Ghar eligibility requires the applicant to: • Be an Indian citizen.

• Own a house with a roof suitable for solar installation.

• Have a valid electricity connection.

• Not have already received another subsidy for solar panels.

The scheme is demand-driven and available to eligible residential consumers across India, including rural households with grid-connected DISCOM connections.

Who Is Not Eligible? You may not qualify for residential CFA if you do not meet the scheme requirements. For example, commercial and institutional consumers do not receive the residential central subsidy even though rooftop solar can be installed on such properties.

A tenant also cannot claim the subsidy independently if they do not meet the eligibility and electricity connection requirements. Property ownership and the electricity connection should therefore be checked before starting the PM Surya Ghar application.

How to Apply for PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Online The PM Surya Ghar apply online application process is handled through the National Portal.

Step 1: Visit the Official Portal Go to the official PM Surya Ghar National Portal.

Step 2: Register Using Your Details Complete your PM Surya Ghar registration by selecting your state and DISCOM, then provide the required details.

Step 3: Enter Electricity Connection Details Log in using your consumer number and mobile number.

Step 4: Submit the Rooftop Solar Application Complete the online rooftop solar form with the required information.

Step 5: Receive DISCOM Approval Wait for technical feasibility approval from your DISCOM.

Step 6: Select a Registered Vendor Choose an eligible vendor listed for your solar installation.

Step 7: Install the Rooftop Solar System Once you receive approval, complete the installation through the selected vendor.

Step 8: Complete Documentation After installation, submit the plant details through the portal.

Step 9: Complete Net Metering Apply for and complete the applicable net-metering requirements.

Step 10: Submit Details for CFA After DISCOM inspection, obtain the commissioning certificate and submit your bank details and required information.

Step 11: Receive the Subsidy The subsidy is transferred directly to the registered bank account after the required verification. Government guidance states that you can receive the subsidy within 30 days after completing the required final submission.

Freyr Energy also helps with documentation, net metering, and subsidy processing, reducing the steps homeowners must manage themselves.

Documents Required for PM Surya Ghar Yojana The exact PM Surya Ghar documents requested can depend on the application stage and DISCOM. Keep important documents and information such as your electricity consumer details, identity details, property-related information and bank details ready.

At the final subsidy stage, government guidance specifically requires bank account details and a cancelled cheque after commissioning.

How Does PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana Work? The process is simple: Apply → Get DISCOM approval → Install rooftop solar → Complete net metering and inspection → Receive subsidy → Generate your own electricity.

During the day, your PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar system generates electricity for your home. With net metering, eligible surplus electricity sent to the grid is accounted for under applicable state regulations.

The impact is already visible. In FY 2025–26 alone, 18.71 lakh rooftop systems with 6.7 GW capacity were installed, benefiting 22.71 lakh households.

PM Surya Ghar Yojana Solar Panel Cost The PM Surya Ghar solar panel price depends on system size, equipment and installation requirements. Based on Freyr Energy's current residential pricing: System Approx. Complete System Cost Central Subsidy Approx. Cost After Subsidy 1 kW ₹1.20–₹1.30 lakh ₹30,000 ₹90,000–₹1.00 lakh 2 kW ₹1.80–₹1.90 lakh ₹60,000 ₹1.20–₹1.30 lakh 3 kW ₹2.30–₹2.40 lakh ₹78,000 ₹1.52–₹1.62 lakh These figures represent complete solar installation costs, not only the module price.

• 1 kW Solar Panel Cost After Subsidy: A 1 kW system costing ₹1.20–₹1.30 lakh can drop to about ₹90,000–₹1 lakh after the ₹30,000 subsidy.

• 2 kW Solar Panel CostAfter Subsidy: A 2 kW system costing ₹1.80–₹1.90 lakh can cost around ₹1.20–₹1.30 lakh after the ₹60,000 subsidy.

• 3 kW Solar Panel Cost After Subsidy: A 3 kW system costing ₹2.30–₹2.40 lakh can come down to approximately ₹1.52–₹1.62 lakh after the maximum ₹78,000 central subsidy.

Eligible Freyr customers may also receive an additional ₹22,000 Freyr discount, taking combined potential savings to up to ₹1 lakh where applicable.

Potential bill savings Depends on tariff/use Depends on tariff/use Depends on tariff/use *Generation is an approximate planning estimate and varies with sunlight, location, shading, weather and system performance.

For another simple sizing reference, Freyr recommends around 1 kW for bills up to ₹2,000, 2 kW for ₹2,000–₹3,500 and 3 kW for ₹3,500–₹5,000.

Benefits of PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana The main benefits of PM Surya Ghar are lower installation cost and lower dependence on grid electricity.

The scheme also provides access to affordable financing. At the national level, it is creating measurable impact: the government estimates that rooftop installations in one crore households could generate 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity and avoid 720 million tonnes of CO2-equivalent emissions over 25 years.

For homeowners, a properly sized rooftop system can also sharply reduce electricity bills. Freyr Energy states that its residential solar system can reduce monthly electricity bills by up to 90%.

What Is Net Metering Under PM Surya Ghar? Net metering uses a bidirectional meter to account for electricity taken from the grid and surplus solar electricity exported to it.

For example, your rooftop system may generate more electricity than your home needs during sunny daytime hours. The surplus can flow to the grid and be adjusted according to your state's applicable net-metering regulations.

Rules vary by state and DISCOM, so check them before installation.

PM Surya Ghar Loan / Financing Options You do not necessarily need to pay the complete solar cost upfront.

As of July 2026, the government states that collateral-free loans are available from nationalised banks at a concessional rate of repo rate + 50 basis points, currently 5.75% per year, with a tenure of 10 years.

Financing has already been widely used. By September 2025, public-sector banks had sanctioned more than 5.79 lakh applications worth ₹10,907 crore under the scheme.

Freyr Energy also offers solar financing support, with EMI options starting from ₹1,466 per month and tenure up to 120 months, subject to eligibility and lender terms.

How to Check PM Surya Ghar Application Status To check your PM Surya Ghar application status, log in to the National Portal using your registered consumer details. You can follow the progress of your application through stages such as feasibility approval, installation, inspection and commissioning.

Keep your application and consumer details available when checking the status or contacting your DISCOM.

How to Check PM Surya Ghar Subsidy Status Your PM Surya Ghar subsidy status can also be tracked through the National Portal after installation and commissioning.

Make sure your bank details are correct and that all required commissioning information has been submitted. The final subsidy is transferred through Direct Benefit Transfer after successful verification.

State-Wise PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana The PM Surya Ghar Yojana is available across India for eligible residential consumers with grid-connected DISCOM connections.

However, net-metering procedures, DISCOM approvals, vendor availability and additional state incentives can differ. Always check the rules applicable to your state instead of assuming the process is identical everywhere.

Common Mistakes to Avoid While Applying Avoid these common errors: • Applying before checking your eligibility.

• Entering the wrong electricity consumer details.

• Choosing a vendor without checking registration requirements.

• Installing before receiving the required DISCOM approval.

• Assuming subsidy increases beyond 3 kW.

• Providing incorrect bank details.

• Forgetting net-metering or commissioning requirements.

• Comparing only panel prices instead of complete system costs.

Correct documentation and following the portal sequence can prevent unnecessary delays in your PM Surya Ghar application.
