An airgun propels projectiles by compressed air or gas and includes BB guns, gas-powered models, air rifles (rifled) and air guns (smooth-bore); three power systems-pneumatic, spring-compression and gas-compression-affect ballistic performance. Despite perceptions as toys, airguns can cause injuries from minor to fatal depending on weapon type, range and impact site; children are particularly at risk due to accessibility and lack of supervision. Regulatory responses should therefore differentiate weapon types, control sale and possession, impose age and supervision requirements, and enforce measures to mitigate misuse and injury.
