identifying registered firms under tax laws

Guest

Dear all,

Greetings from the Netherlands, I am a PhD student in economics. Currently, I am working on a project about tax registration in India and I want to estimate the fraction of firm who are registered under tax laws (sales tax, excises , or income tax) using national survey data. In the National Sample Survey data firms are just asked about the registration under the following:

  • municipal corporation, panchayat, local body
  • khadi and village industries commission
  • coir board
  • silk board
  • jute commissioner
  • state directorate of industries (including district industries centre)
  • development commissioner, handicrafts/  handlooms/  power-looms
  • section 85 of factories act

But, I am unable to link these items with tax registration. Specifically, I want to know for which of these items excise clearance or something similar is compulsory for registration?

Since you are an expert in this field, could you please help me to find a way for identification of registered firms?

 Thanks a lot,

Tax registration identification requires checking VAT, CST, export and company registries since no single consolidated database exists. The survey items listed (local bodies, industry boards, directorates, development commissioners, factories act registration) do not directly equate to tax or excise registration. Identification of tax-registered firms requires consulting specific registries such as VAT and CST records, customs/export registrations (STPI, EOUs, SEZs), company incorporation records and excise/unit-level registers. There is no single consolidated database; researchers must search the relevant tax or sectoral registry for verification. (AI Summary)

In India, there are various Government/ Semi Government, quasi Government agencies under various Acts under which one has to seek the registration certificates, viz:-

  1. VAT
  2. CST
  3. STPI/EOUs/SEZs etc.
  4. Company Act

You would not find required information at one place or on one website.  You would have to search according to you need.
