      Summary: Service tax reform introduced procedural simplifications and certainty measures: two day registration subject to verification, digital invoices and electronic records, defined point of taxation for reverse charge as payment date or three months from invoice, adjusted CENVAT credit rules (time limit introduced; reverse charge credit allowed without vendor payment), uniform 70% abatement for transport, standardized works contract valuation at 70% (40% for original works), and rationalised penalty provisions with concessions for prompt payment and specified record production.

      Summary: A statutory provision subjects any director, manager, secretary or other officer who was in charge of and responsible to the company for conduct of business and was knowingly concerned in specified service tax contraventions to an individual penalty. Specified contraventions include evasion of service tax; issuance of invoices or challans without provision of taxable service; availment and utilisation of credit without actual receipt of services or goods; and failure to remit collected service tax within the prescribed period. Multiple officers may be penalised for a single contravention.

      Summary: Sovereign Gold Bonds are government securities denominated in grams of gold issued by the Reserve Bank for the Government; investors pay cash, receive semiannual interest on initial investment, and obtain cash redemption at maturity based on prevailing market gold prices.       Interest from Non-SLR securities of Banks
      Summary: Interest on non SLR securities held by banks constitutes income attributable to the business of banking and therefore falls under Profits and Gains of Business and Profession, following the Supreme Court principle that bank investments are part of banking business. Consequently, the tax department directs that no appeals should be filed asserting such interest as income from other sources and that existing appeals on that ground may be withdrawn.
