New Delhi, Apr 25 (PTI) BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj on Saturday accused AAP national convener and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal of "double standards", alleging that the proposed "luxurious interiors" of his government bungalow at 95, Lodhi Estate are not in line with his claims of being a common man.
Addressing a press conference, the New Delhi MP said the issue is not about luxury but about "deception" and inconsistency between words and actions.
"Let me reiterate -- the issue is not about living in luxury. The issue is double standards, falsehood, deception, and the gap between words and actions. It is about putting up a facade before the people of this country while practising something entirely different," she said.
Swaraj alleged that while Kejriwal projects himself as an "aam aadmi", the proposed designs of the bungalow indicate otherwise, which she described as "Sheesh Mahal 2.0".
"As is evident from these images, these are not the tastes of an 'aam aadmi' but of a very elite person," she claimed while showing a PPT during the press conference. She also disclosed the name of a private firm, which she claimed is providing the furniture.
Swaraj further claimed that a "Punjab minister is funding furniture and modifications at the Lodhi Estate bungalow", but did not provide specifics. "We have information about who is funding the furniture and the changes being made, including which Punjab minister is bearing the cost," she said.
She also alleged that Kejriwal had earlier said he would not accept a government bungalow or vehicle but had acted contrary to those claims.
"Kejriwal had said he would live in a flat and not take a government bungalow, but he went on to occupy an official residence and built what we call 'Sheesh Mahal' while he was chief minister," she said.
The BJP MP also accused him of misusing government funds during the Covid pandemic.
"Even when Delhi was battling Covid, instead of focusing on the people, government funds were used for this project," she said, adding that Kejriwal continued to stay in government accommodation even after demitting office and later shifted to a Rajya Sabha MP's bungalow with Punjab Police security.
She also raised questions over the alleged use of Punjab government resources, including aircraft.
Referring to the recent defection of seven Rajya Sabha MPs from AAP, she said it reflected "ideological bankruptcy" within the party.
"When key functionaries begin to leave, it becomes natural for the organisation to weaken and crumble. That same ideological bankruptcy is visible in what we are calling 'Sheesh Mahal 2.0'," she said.
Responding to AAP leader Sanjay Singh, who had termed the images shown by the BJP as fake, Swaraj clarified that the visuals are "proposed designs" by a private firm and not actual photographs of the bungalow.
"These are proposed designs prepared by a company based on the client's mandate. We have never claimed these are actual photographs. However, even these designs reflect a lifestyle far removed from that of a common man," she said.
Swaraj also accused AAP of being "anti-women" and claimed that the party had opposed women's reservation.
Earlier in the day, Delhi PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma dubbed the bungalow "Sheesh Mahal 2" and alleged that "private money" has been used to create high-end amenities.
"After he was forced out of Sheesh Mahal by the discerning voters of Delhi, he shifted to Punjab, where he grabbed a bungalow, and now he has prepared 'Sheesh Mahal 2' at Lodhi Estate," Verma said.
Showing pictures of the Type VII bungalow allotted by the Centre to Kejriwal as chief of AAP, which is a national party, the minister said the Central Public Works Department does not spend such amounts on bungalows and alleged that "private money" is used to create superior amenities.nwhile, AAP leader Atishi has claimed that the photographs released by Verma are fake.
In a post on X in Hindi, the former chief minister said, "All the pictures released by Parvesh Verma are fake. They are not pictures of Kejriwal ji's house." PTI ADI MPL MPL
Double standards over government bungalow interiors fuel allegations of public fund misuse and inconsistent public messaging. Allegations were raised regarding the proposed interiors and furnishing of a government bungalow at Lodhi Estate, with claims that the design and amenities were inconsistent with the occupant's self-presentation as a common man. The criticism centred on alleged double standards, including assertions that earlier assurances against using government bungalows or vehicles were not followed and that the accommodation reflected an elite lifestyle rather than the stated public image. Questions were also raised over the alleged use of public or external resources for the bungalow, including claims of funding by a private firm and use of government funds during the Covid period.Press 'Enter' after typing page number.
