Prime Minister to lay foundation for four indigenously built 700 MWe PHWRs under 2015 Atomic Energy Act amendment
The prime minister will lay the foundation stone for a new nuclear power project in Rajasthan comprising four indigenously developed 700 MWe pressurised heavy water reactors, developed by a joint venture between the national nuclear utility and the national thermal power company. The project follows a 2015 amendment to the Atomic Energy Act permitting joint ventures for plant construction and a 2017 approval of a 'fleet mode' approach under which ten 700 MWe units are planned across multiple sites. The government targets 100 GW nuclear capacity by 2047; the national nuclear utility currently operates 24 commercial reactors (8,780 MWe) with plans to expand capacity to 22,480 MWe by 2031-32.
