Indian rupee falls 16 paise to 85.92 against dollar amid trade uncertainties
The Indian rupee declined 16 paise to close at 85.92 against the US dollar amid strengthening American currency and uncertainties over the India-US trade pact. The currency opened weak at 86.02 and traded between 85.74-86.05 during the session. Despite declining global crude oil prices providing some support, investor sentiment remained pressured by expectations of hawkish Federal Reserve policy following US inflation data and ongoing trade agreement uncertainties. An Indian commerce ministry team is conducting four-day bilateral trade talks in Washington. Market analysts expect the rupee to remain range-bound between 85.70-86.10. The dollar index dipped 0.07 percent to 98.54, while Brent crude fell 0.26 percent to $68.53 per barrel. Domestic equity markets showed modest gains with foreign institutional investors selling equities worth Rs 1,858.15 crore on net basis.
