Delhi's fuel ban on end-of-life vehicles delayed until November 1 due to technical system issues
The Centre's air quality panel postponed Delhi's fuel ban on end-of-life vehicles until November 1, following requests from the Delhi Environment Minister citing operational challenges. The ban targets diesel vehicles over 10 years and petrol vehicles over 15 years old. Technical issues with the Automated Number Plate Recognition system, including software glitches and database integration problems, prompted the delay. The Minister argued the move was premature and potentially counterproductive. The system will launch simultaneously in Delhi and five adjoining high-density districts. Delhi has 62 lakh end-of-life vehicles, with 41 lakh being two-wheelers. Legal concerns under the Motor Vehicles Act were also raised regarding fairness and implementation challenges.
