Regulation of online gaming urged to address pre-digital law gaps and cross-border enforcement challenges, committee to be formed.
The court directed formation of a high-powered committee to examine regulation of online gaming and betting, finding the Public Gambling Act, 1867 to be a pre-digital law lacking definitions, jurisdictional reach, and deterrent penalties for digital platforms, fantasy sports and cross-border operations. It highlighted harms from manipulative platform design and risks of money laundering and financial fraud, called for technology-sensitive legislation to address legal, social and security implications, and quashed pending proceedings as relating to a non-cognisable offence while allowing police to re-investigate after legal compliance.
