Finance Ministry Urged to Clear Backlog of Income Tax Appeals; Quarterly Reviews and Appraisals to Boost Efficiency.
The Ministry of Finance's Central Board of Direct Taxes has expressed concern over the backlog of appeals pending before the Commissioners of Income Tax (Appeals) and their slow resolution. The Comptroller and Auditor General and other committees have criticized this issue, urging the department to prioritize clearing these backlogs. An analysis revealed that many Commissioners did not meet the average disposal target of 312 appeals for the fiscal year 2011-12. To address this, quarterly reviews and performance appraisals will be conducted, with emphasis on high-demand and transfer pricing appeals, to improve efficiency and accountability.
