Draft DPDP Rules 2025 aim to balance kids' tech access with safety; parental consent needed for data use.
The Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules are set to be refined to enhance children's connection with technology while safeguarding them from digital harm, according to a Union minister. The draft DPDP Rules 2025, open for public consultation until February 18, 2024, require digital platforms to obtain consent from a child's verifiable guardian or parent before processing their data. Verification can be done using identity details or a virtual token system, which has proven successful in other applications. Sector-specific guidelines may be introduced if necessary, and the DPDP Act will not affect whistleblowers. There is no limit on filing complaints under the Act.
