Japan Sets New Ethoxyquin Limit for Crustaceans at 0.2 ppm After Advocacy by Indian Marine Authority.
The Japanese Health Ministry has set the Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) for Ethoxyquin in crustaceans, including farmed shrimp, at 0.2 ppm, concluding an 18-month effort by the Marine Products Export Development Authority, supported by Indian governmental bodies. This decision follows Japan's abrupt enforcement of a 0.01 ppm default level in August 2012, which was contested due to a lack of scientific basis. The Food Safety Commission recommended an Accepted Daily Intake of 0.0083 mg/kg body weight. Despite regulatory challenges, India's shrimp exports to Japan increased significantly in 2013, driven by supply shortages from other countries and growing confidence in Indian shrimp.
