Service Tax on Goods Transport Agency Services Applies Despite Excise Duty Exemption; No CENVAT Credit for Exempt Units A user inquired about the applicability of service tax for a unit located in Haridwar, which is exempt from excise duty. They asked if service tax is also exempt and whether they can claim CENVAT credit if they pay service tax on input materials and transporter expenses over 10,000. The response clarified that despite the excise duty exemption, service tax on Goods Transport Agency (GTA) services must be paid if applicable, similar to other regions in India. The question of CENVAT credit does not arise if the unit is exempt from excise duty. (AI Summary)
