Customs Officers to Examine Cabin Baggage on Arriving Vessels; Firearms Over Limit Need Commissioner Approval
Steamers and square-rigged vessels arriving from foreign ports must have their cabin baggage examined by a Customs Officer upon anchoring. This includes uniforms and arms for public servants, subject to a declaration of service in India. Baggage on vessels discharging at a wharf is examined by a Preventive Officer. Once passed, baggage can be landed and removed without further customs control. Other baggage must be cleared at the Passenger Pier, with duties paid on non-personal use items. Firearms exceeding specified limits require permission from the Principal Commissioner of Customs.
