Importers of Iron & Steel Melting Scraps Must Provide Undertaking for Specific Furnace Use Under Customs Act.
The Central Government has amended Notification No. 83/90-Cus under the Customs Act, 1962, through Notification No. 91/95-Cus, dated May 12, 1995. The amendment requires importers of iron and steel melting scraps to provide an undertaking to the Assistant Collector of Customs. This undertaking must confirm that the scraps will be used in specific types of furnaces, such as electric arc, induction, or hot blast cupola. Failure to comply will result in the importer being liable to pay the difference between the duty exempted and the duty originally paid at importation.
