Summary: Benami transactions separate legal title from beneficial ownership where consideration is paid by another; historically recognised as tripartite or sham transfers. The Amending Act of 2016 expands the definition to include transfers with third-party consideration, fictitious names, unaware ostensible owners, and untraceable payors, and establishes adjudicating authorities, penal provisions, confiscation of Benami property, and a prohibition on re-transfer, with retrospective effect to earlier enactments.

Summary: Merchandise exports for April-March 2017-18 were US$302.84 billion with positive year-on-year growth, while imports rose to US$459.67 billion, producing a widened merchandise trade deficit; oil and non-oil import values both increased, services receipts for February were below prior-period levels but services maintained a positive monthly trade balance, and combined provisional merchandise and services data show an overall trade deficit larger than the previous year.
Summary: The Central Board of Excise & Customs, under Section 14(2) of the Customs Act, amended Notification No. 36/2001 Customs by substituting TABLE 1, TABLE 2 and TABLE 3 to prescribe revised tariff values for specified imports. The tables set updated US dollar per metric tonne (or per unit) reference values for vegetable oils (crude palm oil, RBD palm oil, palmolein varieties, crude soyabean oil), brass scrap, poppy seeds, areca nuts and unit values for gold and silver where specified notification benefits apply, thereby establishing the reference figures for customs valuation and duty assessment.
