<h1>'Digital arrest' scams via video calls or social apps flagged as fraud; expanded cybercrime units and reporting helpline urged</h1> No legal provision recognises or authorises any form of 'digital arrest'; arrest cannot lawfully be effected through video calls, messaging applications, or social media, and no police or government agency is authorised to demand money through such channels, with the consequence that demands framed as 'digital arrest' are characterised as fraudulent impersonation and extortion. Cybercrime enforcement capacity has been expanded by operationalising cybercrime police stations in all districts, establishing dedicated cyber units, and setting up cyber help desks at every police station, with the consequence of widening local access points for reporting and response to cyber offences. Citizens are directed to promptly report cybercrime via the national cyber helpline to improve recovery prospects.
