Government seeks Rs 75,286 crore extra budget for farmer relief, power subsidies, welfare schemes amid rising public debt
The Maharashtra government has placed supplementary budget demands of Rs 75,286.38 crore before the legislative assembly, primarily for farmer relief, electricity subsidies, and social welfare schemes, adding to total supplementary demands of Rs 1,73,019 crore for the current government. Key allocations include compensation for rain and flood-affected farmers, support under a women's financial assistance scheme, and funding for employment, health, municipal grants, stamp duty cess refunds, and infrastructure. Significant sums are earmarked for departments handling revenue, forests, industries, energy, labour, mining, urban development, public works, planning, home, public health, water resources, education, sports, and social justice. This constitutes the fourth set of supplementary demands following earlier approvals linked to welfare schemes, administrative expenses, and statutory or event-related obligations, against a backdrop of state public debt of Rs 9.32 lakh crore.
