Brazil ex-president ordered back to jail over coup attempt, escape risk and ankle monitor breach, pending review
Brazil's Supreme Court ordered the preemptive arrest of a former president, previously under house arrest and facing a 27-year prison sentence for leading a coup attempt. A Supreme Court justice cited violation of the ankle monitor and risk of escape, including potential flight to nearby embassies and use of mass demonstrations organized by a relative to create disorder. The former president and allies were convicted of attempting to overthrow democracy, leading an armed criminal organization, and attempting the violent abolition of the democratic rule of law. The justice directed that the arrest respect the dignity of a former head of state. A Supreme Court panel is scheduled to review the arrest order in an extraordinary session.
