Horticulture advisory urges fog and frost protection for citrus, mango, litchi, papaya, guava and young orchards
A state horticulture department in a major fruit-producing district issued advisory measures to fruit growers to mitigate winter-related crop damage from fog, low temperatures, and dry weather. The department warned that fog and cold can rupture plant cells and reduce yields, particularly in citrus and evergreen fruit crops such as mango, litchi, papaya, guava, and similar plants. Recommended protective measures include regular irrigation to prevent frost, covering young plants with straw while allowing sunlight exposure, controlled burning of dry biomass to raise ambient temperature, use of nylon shade nets for mango, application of potash to improve tolerance, band application of fertilizers mixed with organic manure and mulching, and treatment of plant stems with copper-based fungicidal preparations.
