Order directs states and central government to file responses and compliance affidavits on pan-India student mental health guidelines
The Supreme Court directed all states and Union Territories to file responses within eight weeks and gave the central government eight weeks to submit a compliance affidavit on implementation of its July 25 judgment prescribing 15 pan-India guidelines to address student mental health and suicide in educational institutions. The July judgment required, inter alia, that states, as far as practicable, notify rules mandating registration, student protection norms and grievance redressal for private coaching centres; that institutions adopt a uniform, annually reviewed mental health policy; and held the guidelines binding until suitable legislation or regulatory frameworks are enacted. The matter is listed for further hearing in January 2026.
