Two airport cleaners arrested for allegedly smuggling 1.2 kg gold via arriving passengers; gold seized under Customs Act
Two airport cleaning staff were arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence for allegedly conspiring in a smuggling scheme that used arriving international passengers to conceal foreign-origin gold, later retrieved by insiders. Surveillance at the airport observed a staff member place a packet on an aerobridge which, when recovered, contained 1.2 kg of 24-karat gold dust in wax form valued at about Rs 1.6 crore. During interrogation one employee admitted hiding the packet and implicated a supervisor, who was subsequently arrested; the gold was seized under the Customs Act.
