Aviation regulator orders carrier to reinspect RAT stowage after PCM replacements and demands manufacturer report on uncommanded RAT deployments
A national aviation regulator ordered a commercial carrier to reinspect RAT stowage on all aircraft that recently had power conditioning modules (PCMs) replaced and instructed the manufacturer to provide a comprehensive report and worldwide service-difficulty data on uncommanded Ram Air Turbine (RAT) deployments. The action follows two recent Boeing 787 incidents involving an unexpected RAT deployment and a diversion after autopilot and other electrical system degradations; a pilots' union urged grounding of the fleet and a special audit. The regulator also advised the carrier to review D-check work packages given the PCM change; investigations and mandated maintenance reviews are ongoing.
