State sees 28% rise in cognizable crime (2021-2023) driven by 91% surge in SLL offences
Between 2021 and 2023 the state recorded a 28% rise in total cognizable crimes driven by a 91% surge in offences under Special and Local Laws (SLL), mainly excise, narcotics and local regulatory breaches, while Indian Penal Code (IPC) offences stayed broadly stable. IPC crime and SLL crime rates remain below national averages. Violent and gender-based offences remained low, with very few rape, trafficking or child sexual offences reported; juvenile justice cases rose modestly. Cybercrime, economic offences and property crimes increased, and the state recorded the lowest overall cognizable crime rate in the region.
