<h1>National suicide report 2023: 1,71,418 deaths, family problems and illness top causes; young adults most affected</h1> A government crime-records agency reported 1,71,418 suicides in 2023, a 0.3% increase from 2022, with family problems (31.9%) and illness (19.0%) the leading causes. Five states accounted for 49% of deaths; the most populous state accounted for 5.3% despite 17% of population. Young adults (18-44) comprised the largest shares; children's suicides were mainly due to family problems, love affairs and exam failure. Housewives represented 51.6% of female victims. Socioeconomic and behavioural causes included substance abuse, marriage disputes, indebtedness and unemployment. Suicide rates per 100,000 varied widely across regions, with several territories and states recording sharp year-on-year increases or decreases.
