<h1>Union Cabinet approves Phase III medical college upgradation to add 5,000 PG and 5,023 MBBS seats by 2028-29</h1> The Union Cabinet approved Phase-III of a scheme to strengthen and upgrade existing central and state government medical colleges to add 5,000 postgraduate seats and extend an upgradation scheme to add 5,023 MBBS seats with an enhanced cost ceiling of Rs 1.50 crore per UG seat, to be implemented by 2028-29. Total funding is Rs 15,034.50 crore (central share Rs 10,303.20 crore; state share Rs 4,731.30 crore). The expansion applies only to government medical colleges; detailed implementation guidelines will be issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The measures aim to increase specialist availability, leverage existing infrastructure, and improve geographic equity in healthcare.
