US raises tariffs to 50% on Indian seafood, hitting 62 processors and 25,000 prawn farmers; government seeks new markets
A recent US tariff increase, raising duties on Indian goods to 50% (combining an existing 25% duty and an additional 25% penalty linked to purchases of Russian crude and military equipment), has legally and commercially impacted seafood trade from one Indian state: 62 seafood processors are directly affected and about 25,000 prawn farmers indirectly so, as roughly 24.5% of the state's marine exports go to the US. The state fisheries ministry reported export volumes and values for 2024-25 and said the central government, consulting states, is pursuing alternative export markets (Japan, South Africa, the UK, Russia, Australia, Southeast Asia) to mitigate losses.
