Government plan to use temple funds for rental marriage halls blocked; devotees say funds not for commercial use
The Supreme Court declined to stay a high court order that quashed government directives permitting use of temple funds to construct rental marriage halls, observing devotees do not donate for that purpose and questioning commercial or vulgar uses of temple premises. The high court had held such construction fell outside 'religious purposes.' The government defended the policy as facilitating religious marriages and reducing costs. Petitioners argued the orders violated provisions of the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act restricting commercial use of temple funds. The apex court agreed to hear the challenge at a later date.
