Former president convicted of attempted coup and related offences, sentenced to 27 years 3 months, may appeal
A Supreme Court panel convicted a former president of attempting a coup and related offences, sentencing the defendant to 27 years and three months' imprisonment; the defendant remains under house arrest and may appeal. Four of five justices found guilt on counts including attempted coup, membership in an armed criminal organisation, attempted violent abolition of democratic rule, and threats to state assets; one justice dissented. The panel has up to 60 days to publish its written ruling, after which defence counsel have five days to file motions for clarification. The defendant is already barred from running for office in a separate case, and the conviction may spur legislative or diplomatic responses.
