Chief minister calls central order under Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025 an 'election gimmick', questions legal rights and documents
A state chief minister criticized a central government order under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025 that permits members of specified minority communities from three neighbouring countries who entered India on or before Dec. 31, 2024, to remain without valid travel documents, calling it an 'election gimmick' and challenging its unilateral adoption without parliamentary debate. She questioned legal and administrative consequences-whether beneficiaries would receive voting rights, identity documents (Aadhaar), ration cards, citizenship, or other constitutional protections-and contrasted the order with the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, which ties citizenship eligibility to arrivals on or before Dec. 31, 2014. She also welcomed recent GST Council rate cuts, including on insurance.
