Government launches subsidised onion sales at Rs24/kg from buffer stock to curb retail prices above Rs30/kg
The government launched a subsidised onion sale at Rs 24/kg in select cities to curb retail prices above Rs 30/kg, using about 25 tonnes from a 300,000-tonne buffer procured under the Price Stabilisation Fund at an average cost of Rs 15/kg. Sales are administered through cooperative marketing and consumer federations and will expand to additional cities and run through December. Officials indicated no export duty or restrictions and cited higher domestic production and technology-enabled monitoring of procurement, storage and disposal to stabilise food inflation and recover procurement costs.
