India set to become sustainable aviation fuel exporter using biomass, agricultural residue and used cooking oil; roadmap targets 1%-5% blending
The civil aviation ministry said India can become an exporter of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), citing more than 750 million tonnes of available biomass and about 230 million tonnes of surplus agricultural residue as feedstock alongside used cooking oil. A feasibility study prepared with an international aviation body and regional partner assesses domestic feedstock, production pathways, infrastructure and policy readiness and offers a roadmap for SAF adoption. The report projects significant lifecycle CO2 reductions versus conventional jet fuel, potential annual emission cuts and reduced crude imports, and envisages blending targets of 1% by 2027, 2% by 2028 and 5% by 2030.
