<h1>Four-member SIT led by retired judge to probe private wildlife rescue centre over alleged illegal acquisition, welfare, CITES breaches</h1> The Supreme Court constituted a four-member Special Investigation Team, headed by a retired apex court judge, to conduct an independent fact-finding inquiry into a private wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre following media and NGO complaints alleging non-compliance with laws and improper acquisition of animals, including elephants. The SIT is tasked to examine compliance with wildlife protection and zoo rules, CITES, import-export laws, animal welfare and husbandry standards, mortalities, breeding and conservation practices, alleged smuggling, financial irregularities and related legal breaches, may summon information from officials, petitioners and journalists, must report by September 12, and the petitions will be listed September 15.
