Delays in removing obscene online content and weak cybercrime tracing hamper victims; call to integrate forensic science and victimology training
A High Court judge observed that delays and failures in removing obscene online material cause continuing embarrassment to victims, with investigating agencies often unable to reach originators or service providers. Investigators can trace financial cybercrime to a limited extent but face sophisticated money-laundering across numerous accounts and jurisdictions, hampering recovery and prosecution. Courts are also receiving frequent, sometimes inconclusive, conflicting post-mortem and forensic opinions. Speakers urged integration of forensic science and victimology into criminal justice training to improve investigation, adjudication, victim compensation and the prompt blocking of illicit financial flows.
