<h1>Vice-presidential contest narrowed to ruling coalition nominee versus joint opposition candidate after scrutiny of nomination papers under Act</h1> After scrutiny, the vice-presidential race is set as a direct contest between the ruling coalition's nominee and the joint opposition candidate, with all four sets of nomination papers for each found valid. The returning officer reported 68 nomination papers from 46 candidates; 28 papers (19 candidates) were summarily rejected under the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act and a further 40 papers (27 candidates) were rejected on scrutiny under relevant sections. The election is scheduled for September 9; the electoral college comprises members of both houses of Parliament totaling 788 seats (782 currently filled).
