Stray dogs may be sterilised, vaccinated and returned to same area unless rabid or aggressive; feeding rules imposed
The Supreme Court modified its August 11 order, allowing stray dogs picked up from shelters to be sterilised, vaccinated and released back in the same area, except for animals rabid, suspected rabid or displaying aggressive behaviour; the earlier prohibition on release is kept in abeyance. Municipal authorities are directed to establish designated feeding areas (not on streets), install notice boards, and enforce penalties for street feeding. All states and union territories were impleaded and related high-court pleas transferred to the apex court; the matter is posted for hearing after eight weeks. The order arose from a suo motu suo motu public-interest proceeding on dog-bite reports.
