Election Commission must publish reasons for deleting 6.5 million voters under Article 324, ensure transparency and fair process
The Election Commission informed the Supreme Court that it operates amid intense political hostility, with nearly all its decisions contested, as it justified conducting a special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in a poll-bound state. The court acknowledged the Commission's authority under Article 324 and the Representation of Peoples Act but emphasized that the process must be reasonable and fair. The bench directed the Commission to publish the names and reasons for deleting approximately 6.5 million voters from the draft rolls to enhance transparency and public confidence. It also ordered that deleted voters be allowed to claim inclusion by presenting Aadhaar cards as proof of identity. The Commission was instructed to widely publicize the lists of deleted voters, including those who died or migrated, at local offices and through media, and to provide searchable online access, with a compliance report due by August 22.
