Delays in River Interlinking Due to Disputes, Lack of Studies, and Incomplete Reports Under Section 3 Guidelines
A parliamentary committee reported that India's river interlinking programme faces significant delays due to inter-state disputes, insufficient studies, and incomplete project reports. Of 30 planned links, only one project is under implementation, with others lacking detailed project reports. Despite allocated funds for land acquisition and rehabilitation, state consensus remains elusive. The committee recommended comprehensive socio-economic and environmental studies to gain state support and accelerate progress. It also highlighted under-utilization of flood management funds, incomplete flood-prone area projects, delayed approval of floodplain zoning guidelines, and critical manpower shortages in dam safety authorities. The Ministry of Jal Shakti was urged to address these issues and report on progress within three months.
