Cyber Firm Exposes Fake Currency Syndicate Using Social Media, Provides Evidence Under Digital Forensics Rules
A cyber intelligence firm uncovered counterfeit currency syndicates based in Maharashtra operating openly on social media platforms, shifting from traditional dark web and underground methods. The firm identified over 4,500 posts promoting fake currency worth approximately Rs 17.5 crore within six months, linked to more than 750 accounts and 410 unique phone numbers. Using facial recognition, GPS data, and digital forensics, the firm attributed key individuals involved and provided detailed evidence, including locations and contact information, to central and state law enforcement agencies. The intelligence was also shared with regulatory authorities to facilitate prompt action against the illicit network, aiming to protect national financial security and public interest.
