IMF Deputy Managing Director Returns to Harvard as Economics Professor After Seven Years
An Indian-American economist serving as first deputy managing director at the International Monetary Fund announced her departure to return to Harvard University as an economics professor. After nearly seven years at the IMF, where she was the first female chief economist and later promoted to deputy managing director, she will rejoin Harvard's Economics Department as the inaugural Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics on September 1. During her IMF tenure from January 2019, she oversaw multilateral surveillance, analytical work on fiscal and monetary policy, debt, and international trade while representing the organization at G-7 and G-20 forums. The IMF Managing Director praised her exceptional intellectual leadership during challenging periods including the pandemic, wars, and cost-of-living crisis. She co-authored the 'Pandemic Plan' for ending COVID-19 and maintained the World Economic Outlook as the preeminent global economy report.
